Etsy

reacently i’ve wanted to be more entrepreneurialwith my art and taking it upon myself to rebrand myself to Alex’s gallery studio on instagram, and now etsy, this is to make it more offial sounding

here is where i hope to sell my work and make prints when i get back to uni, for now im selling digital copies of my work, but have quite a few friends who have been interested in purchasing work, im just waiting for the right moment to announce my store as i dont wont people to have digital copies as i dont feel that is the correct way to view my work, ideally its on canvey or as a print behind a frame but for now with Rona limitations

payment logistics

since i hope to make a profit off of this magazine and pay my featured artists a percent for their contradicted work i set up a businesses bank account with Natwest so that any payments to that would be completely seperate to my personal accounts, this would help alot when paying artists.

my team and i plan to set up stalls at uni campuses selling copies at ยฃ5 which will pay into my account, and then at the end of each month i will pay royalties out to my artists, per sale percent is still to be decided but if 500(ยฃ5 as pennies) is divided by 23(no of artist) it works out to be about 20p per physical copy, to this i also hope to sell digital copies to reach a further audience as a slightly lower price off set by printing costs. i’ll sell these copies from my etsy store so the money will go directly into my business account. my aim is to be completely transparent about the processes with my artists as i dont want to be caught on the bad side of my friends, since this project aims to strengthen the bonds in the course not rip them apart.

Instagram post

today we launched our IG account to create buzz for our magazine, to which i gave my team a login password so they could access it and introduce themselves in the coming weeks, this will help us reach a wider audience as well as make public announcements rather than just through emailing or our facebook group chat. this also gives us a face to put out there to let the world know were here and something to show book publishers as a legitimate platform

this post stated out mission to help emerging artists shine in the spot light

Consent forms

thinking about our publication in the world of industry i thought about copy right infringement and consent from the artists as well as the muses, initially i emailed Kellie for clarity on the subject, as she taught us our module on copy rights, however, without a response i decided to dig myself and came across this article

which indicated that it would be a legal requirement for our artists to consent to us using their images and their muse’s also to consent to having their images used in a publication that was seeking to make a profit off of their likeness as a firm of advertising, this doubled for muses who were under 18 and since they could not sign themselves we would require a signature from a parental figure to confirm that they would be allowed to appear in our publication.

to this i emailed outed out a form and directions on how to fill out the form

this is my version of the form i uploaded to the google docs for people to view as an example for them to then download and fill out the blank version, many people emailed back quite quickly and was good to see a positive response, this is something i should of done from the start and something im very glad i looked into before publishing in October.

a few people had issues, and i sent out reminder emails for to people emphasis that we cant use the artist’s work without these form and it would be unlawful

magazine creation

now with the admin section underway we can begin to create the actual magazine, im responsible for: the Front Cover, Myself, Annabel Murphy, Mara Cullara, Onna Borbely, Rebecca Davis, and Stephanie Mensing, along with advertising with other people

looking at front covers i asked my team if there was anyone they wanted to nominate for the front cover of the magazine, i thought about Zuzia R for her work from image and context

Zuzia Rapinska (2020) muse – Esma

the first time i saw zuzia’s work i noted to her that this image would be great as a front cover for a fashion magazine as it offered a very empowered optimistic gaze while being quite simplistic in its aesthetics allowing for titles to be used, complimented by the beautiful tonal colors and its natural location

Elizabeth Reaney (2020) Muse – Unknown

Phoebe suggested Elizabeth’s photo of protesters for their strong captivating green eyed stare, its color pallet is also quite pleasing as its dark red tones bottom corners accent the frame and hint to the lips and earrings, the dark hair helps compliment this, while act as a vignette. however its such a shame because after talking to Elizabeth about this she never get a social consent from her muse meaning she was unable to contact them about our consent form. without this it means we could be liable for ruining someones likeness, for this reason we can not use this image as it could come back to bite us, and as a small start up project we dont want a lawsuit

after exporting zuzia’s image from the google drive i loaded it in indesign for it vectorisation of pixels

testing out the name ‘Emerge’ to begin with i asked my team what they thought of the name to a good response but wanted to play around with the idea, i didnt like the amount of E’s and and how it fits with the font, reaching an agreement on ‘emerging’ since it slows better, and doesnt have an ebrupt ending but tails nicely

playing around with the name ‘avant garde‘ meaning a new and experimental idea of art which would describe what im trying to convey with my publication for upcoming artists, however it probably doesn’t indicate to the audience what i want with its french origin, it might seem like its trying to be something more, to this my team also didnt like this word

1 this image with the text above doesnt work to the level i wanted as the white doesn’t offer a strong contrast to the background as i would like, making this text near illegible

2 i noticed this too for avant garde, as i feel if i were to add more weight to the font with the slider it might stand out more since it just doesnt have that contrast to make it readable or pop out against the background

3 trying to separate out my text i went for a top and bottom text approach as there was a lot of blank space to work with, this allowed the garde section to stand out as the flat brown tone can provide more of a background for the text to rest upon

4(final) is our final cover combining what i’ve worked with i went for ‘Emerging’ as a title for its flowing accents as if written by hand, while also having the serif slab on captialised letters, but a standard serif on lower case letters. increasing the weight increased the legibility of this text and places in front of the ground jacket allowed this to pop more

i later confirmed with my team that they liked this image to which they all agreed, giving them the opportunity to compare each of the designs and vote on their favourites, after this i confirmed with Zuzia that she was happy with the design and manipulation of her image as and good artist should do when working with another’s work

in worked hard to get everyone’s work into a vague layout but with everything going on i will admit they got a little neglected before our deadline of june , images and text were fitted to grids but sizing needed proper care and without access to ideisgn after our trial my team and i were unable to make further headway on our layouts. this is something i will have to continue in September when we get back to uni

each double page spread given to artist would have had room for a small piece of text ranging from 50-200 words to summarise their work and practice to the reader, this was something the artists would write and submit to the folder, taking the work load off my team and to which we would fit to the images on a page, along side their social media as this is meant to promote them as an artist, allowing readers to get an glimpse into the artist thus teasing them into checking out their accounts.

the image above places the pages into thirds letting the image take up 2/3rds displaying the work where the text is placed adjacent as not to be over whelmed with text

another layout idea way to have a full page image and have text resting on top of the image, this text would take up a small amount of the image as not to distract the viewer or impede their experience, it should be noted that the legiblility of this page isnt the best and also needs a touch up as the contrast between the text and image is low, maybe moving it into the white out reflection would work better ?

a page featuring work from Mara Cullara was interesting to work with, they provided three different images to the folder, one of which was fairly explicit showing vague nudity, these others worked better and didnt cross this line,

this will be continued in September to give my artists work justice, id hate for this to be the end result as it doesn’t paint their work in a positive light, more of a slap dash fumble

spread sheet

as this project gets underway its clear that keeping tabs on everything will be a difficult feat to do mentally so by using google spread sheets im able to easily keep track of everything going on. by also using a google app i can share it within my team and they’re also able to update a live version to everyone to see, this is a huge help as it means everyone is on the same page and everyone knows whats happening

June 14th

starting off simple to begin with i knew i needed to see a list of artists that were being featured, i would update this as i got responses from recruitment email, from here i started to add green highlighting to the panels that were completed, separating them out to clearly label the submitted text and images on the artist’s side and the double page spread on our side

June 26th

from here we got more responses from 1st years and a few 2nd and 3rd years and added them to our mailing list and facebook group chat, i also added a column for consent forms and asked my team which artist’s work they would like to undertake, giving them this first response to what they wanted to do might have helped encourage them to complete this work load. i also though about how we’d need a front cover, a contents, and an acknowledgements page

July 1st

from here i added a numbering system to indicate how man artists we had along with roman numerals ( i, ii, iii ) to indicate additional pages needed to form a cohesive magazine and properly credit the artist’s work used

i then color coded everything along with a key to indicate the progression of our work, the artist’s submissions of work, and any extensions granted. you can see on consent form there have been some issues highlighted with muses signatures as a few of the artists have forgotten to add this information meaning we would be unable to use their likeness in the publication without their consent

i also added a section for key dates and notes for team meetings so everyone would be in the same page and know what is going on, what has happened, and the coming events. this would also give my team the opportunity to add to this and bring up any points they wanted to make during our meetings as i made a habit of updating these a week in advance.

i also noted a small space to show the division of work, helping make it an even work load for everyone, 4(team members) / 21(artists) =5.25(page division), rounded up everyone needs to do 6 pages each, at the moment it shows both Josh and Phoebe are under the required number and need to be assigned pages

recruiting email

after the landscaping project, i announced the magazine during our end of year celebration meeting via the google hangouts video call to the photography course to which i got more good reactions from both second and third years as well as members of staff. reciving this i decided to draft up an email the next day which stated

Hiya all, congratulations on finishing your first year of uni, you’ve all done so well and produced some great work throughout the year and now is your chance to celebrate this
As I’ve said in the group chat, I’m looking to publish a magazine/look book as a collaboration of our works come September, when we go back to uni, and plan on selling copies in the uni store
A percent of these profits will go back to you as a featured artist and will be divided equally among everyone
However I may ask for a ยฃ3-ยฃ5 donated to be featured as this is to help cover printing costs
For this donation price you will be giving a double page spread, which may include 1-3 images, a short description about the pieces which you may write yourself, and any social media @’s
All artists will also be acknowledged at the back of the book
This will look great on a CV as we aim to look professional
If you’re interested please reply to this email and I will make a group chat to organize things, and let anyone know anyone who might be interested- I also consider opening this to other years/departments if there is interest

to this i also recognised the need for a team to help me with this project as to do this solely would be quite taxing

I will also require three volunteers to help me create this book, this will involve helping out with design layout and requires you to have an understanding of InDesign
I plan on taking advantage of the free student adobe trail that lasts until July, this will also be our time frame to produce this publication
Look forward to hearing from you

initially this email was issued to first years as i wasnt sure how many people would be interested but i later reconsidered this as a few 2nd and 3rd years were also intrested, this would help us reach a wider audience as this might hit a slightly older age group, and would go to serve the 3rd years a lot more since leaving uni offering them a resource to put on their CV’s and add to their portfolio.

from this email i got a lot of positive responses from artists who wanted be featured totally 23, as well as 3 people who wanted to help with the layout process and promotional side of things, this process will come at a later date but is something to consider for now, we’ll also look into our social media presence as a group and discuss the best course of action

Interview with 3rd year Stephanie Mensing

Stephanie Mensing is a third year photographer now leaving uni to explore her passion of photography and making her way in the world of industry by running social media accounts for companies as a full time job

before our interview we had a small correspondence emailing detailing a lot of useful information

“Yeah definitelyย have it in the works, its best to plan a head a month worth of posts, I have been chatting to tracy Marshall from northern narratives, as I now have a job in change of a companiesย social media presence! I have learned that facebook is great but instagram can really channel our audience better!ย
this is what she said ‘Plan ahead. Definitely plan. So have a sense of each account as a brand. Think of what it says as a brand and then get a few weeks’ outline for it in your mind with a few tips. So for example this recent NN one has been a mix of the open call, sharing other peopleโ€™s photography things and now a take over for a week in a couple of weeks time. I know it all ahead roughly for a couple of weeks. Same with my own. I know itโ€™s been very charity sale for a week or so, now is moving into sharing other peopleโ€™s things and then into Bristol photo festival. Thatโ€™s it to 22nd roughing. So having a guideline for each week ahead and maybe two to three days drafted and saved.’
So i roughly post with my company about 3/4 a week, it doesnt mean its all in one go, cus people will get annoyed with same photos appearing up on the page (understandably) The plan does help a lot as you suddenly forget an account
If you start to build up the account before you publish people will like that and you might get more interaction with viewers for when you publish you could do an option of online etc (like maybe using issu) I have something similar on my website https://stephaniemensing.com/Books so thats a fun way to view things if people are unable to buy could do like a digital version etc.

You could start out a weekly email a bit like james monday morning message. using Mailchimp! or for time time being do what your doing but when branching out could start a blog, which will also be a good presence! ‘Sign upโ€ will be a great choice for most publishers. It is leading directly to an email newsletter signup form. This gets interested users immediately into a valuable interaction with you. If they click, youโ€™ll get an email address. You can use it to build a database of email addresses โ€“ this way you would be able to stay in touch with them by sending news, sales offers and information about special events or actions.
Show something that readers wonโ€™t find in the magazine: behind the scenes of the interview, your daily work, members of your team. People just like it! And have the impression that they get something special. Itโ€™s also a way to show your brand from a different side.

Concentrate on those social referrals which are driving loyalty. Google Analytics flags this up in weekly stats. Start focusing on what content drives deeper engagement, which metrics drive a deeper relationship with your content, your brand and your business. so doesnt have to be google but just the website analytics but google is free! You are able to see the costs which have been sold.

I thought that takeย oversย each week would be good way of bringing people! I wasn’tย sure whether thisย was just a spa people based publication! But I’m sureย previousย alumnus would be very happy to help (not just our year)! As some of them actually work in publications within bath!ย ย I don’tย know how many of you are working on this, but as a part of our final year exhibitionย (to which we are still attempting to do) we split up into groups for responsibilitiesย that were always good and had a meeting once a week to say what everyonesย done! This was also a good way to keep up with everyone and make friends! we learnt to definitely to split responsibility as people got quite angry.ย (still are to this day)ย I also thought photograd do are really good at promoting theyreย monthly postcards they also do weekly hastagย

I also dont know if you know that uwe do an inhouse photo agency https://www.photohouse.uk/Thats a good thing to look at!ย
http://www.antlerpress.co.uk/
http://loupemag.com/
https://www.circusjournal.com/themagazineย is one of my favouriteย magazine about bath, maybe get in contact with them and I’m sureย they will be happy to help out. Its free and they drop there magazine off around shops each quatre. So maybe ask them as a starting publicationย what they do etc.
https://www.inpublishing.co.uk/articles/a-7step-social-media-plan-for-your-new-magazine-862

Im sorry if thatsย alot!ย
I hope that helps!!ย
If you ever need anything I am more than happy to help, us third years aren’t scary don’t worry!ย ย
Stephย “

this was super useful and gave me some great ideas for our magazine, she seemed very knowledgeable to which i decided to interview her

edited interview transcript

ALC How did you start working for a company?

SM yeah so i work for a company and  basically, I worked for them previously and they asked me if I wanted to work for them and be in charge of taking photos for them, I obviously took the opportunity and said yeah

ALC and that lead to running their social media ??

SM yeah so I took out an ad in our local newspaper because I was looking for people to photograph and they saw me, and they had zero social media presence and they got in contact with me about a position

ALC so what is it that you do for them ??

SM so they have four companies. Itโ€™s like working for Topshop in a way, like running their marketing, social media, and posting photos for them to their Instagram. Its called the India Shop and itโ€™s a fair trade store that imports everything from India, also own HoneyStreet Cafe, HoneyStreet Handmade, as well as the HoneyStreet canal boats and Iโ€™ve basically taken on their Facebook, Instagram, trip adviser, emails you get sent out. Iโ€™ve also been photographing all of their stock from the India shop, so Iโ€™ve been doing all that and set up in painting in the studio

ALC wow, that sounds like quite a lot!

SM yeah it is quite a lot *laughs*

ALC so is there much networking to be done ?? like are their people you meet at events or people youโ€™ve been put in contact with because of this role?

SM yeah of course, so itโ€™s not just me sat alone in a little room, Iโ€™ve been talking to people who are in charge of doing website development and how they work, and thatโ€™s kind of a good way to to go about it because youโ€™re talking to people from fairtrade and then you get to know them quite well, on a name to name basis, you also get to talk to people who do group communities at Wiltshire

ALC thatโ€™s pretty cool that there are loads of opportunities to meet people both who are apart of the industry as well as outside, helping you build those connections, but do you get much creative freedom within this ??

SM  oh yeah, I get full rein, so the founder is like 80 years old and this is her passion project, but the son is taking it over and has little knowledge of how to photograph the products and put them on the website. Heโ€™s like โ€˜here you go Steph, youโ€™re here to be arty, have fun!โ€™

ALC *laughs*

SM like yesterday I spent 9 hours in my room photographing all weird kinds of soap, with lights and everything, it was really so much fun and so cool

ALC thatโ€™s really cool, how do you many that workload though?? You work post for so many companies and doing 9 hour shifts, surely thatโ€™s quite a lot for you ??

SM so I have a planner, and so with that, Iโ€™m able to schedule what I need to do each day so it forms a routine, I also bought a monthly subscription to Hootsuite, which is integration for social media, helping with all the accounts that I run as Iโ€™m able to schedule posts each week and it does it automatically, so thatโ€™s a really good way to do it as you donโ€™t have to type everything out like hashtags every day, its a nightmare otherwise, I seduced a weekโ€™s worth on Monday, which gives me Wednesday to sort next weeks posts, its quite simple jobs but its quite fun to do

ALC yeah that makes a lot of sense because I know currently Iโ€™m struggling with my social media management since I recently opened my second art account, but if Iโ€™m able to schedule like that or repeating hashtags thatโ€™s way better

SM oh completely, so youโ€™ve just got to think about, your image and what you want to show because else youโ€™ll have too many photos, its difficult but its fun to think about the content you have to create

ALC oh sweet, how does affect your own work though ??

SM I havenโ€™t been able to photography much since uni really since ive been too busy anyway and I just donโ€™t want to touch a camera on the weekend but Iโ€™ve started planning trips for myself to go off and shoot, so Iโ€™ve got all of my grandfatherโ€™s old film from the 1930s and he was a quite well known person within the air force so many a massive catalogue of all of his work that hes taken, so yeah its interesting, but yeah with everything that I do I get to meet so many new people and because I like to meet odd weird and wonderful people, like train people or pigeon people, but Iโ€™ve meant a motorbike infusiast whos into old bikes form 1910s and he did his Ph.D. on New Zealand so Iโ€™ve been talking to him a lot and taking photographs, so there is that aspect that I can meet all these people, where I also work thereโ€™s also this crop circle museum so theres all these people coming in so im always thinking โ€˜oh I could do you for a projectโ€™. Itโ€™s just meeting my own contacts for my own personal benefit

ALC that sounds like some great networking,

SM yeah its really good

, , , ,

ALC I mean to ask you, do you get paid for the work that you do ??

SM well its a full time job so its an hourly rate, as if you were to work in a cafe or something

ALC where do you see yourself going from this ??

SM I would personally like to do this 2-3 more years, hopefully, since at the moment Iโ€™m on a 6 month contract, so it would make a great portfolio, so in two weeks of working there I already had 100 followers, so Iโ€™d like to do it more, and maybe start my own, its interesting to see that I built this social media presence, like id like to work for peoples social media  company. So people hire me to run their media in the future but there isnโ€™t an aspect of what I want to achieve its a case of being in the air at the moment

ALC so in our emails together you mentioned about northern narratives, and working alongside, Tracy Marshall??

SM so she came to uni actually, and she liked my work so weโ€™ve been in contact a lot since she came to a gusset lecture talk, so the contacts we make in uni are quite a big thing since most of us have all been in contact with one person or another, so just ask them, take full advantage, they make you go to them but theyโ€™re a helpful resource to have, Iโ€™ve seen you come to a few of them.

ALC yeah Iโ€™ve really enjoyed some of the gust speakers

SM theyโ€™re so interesting but if they like your work, youโ€™ve just gotta be honest with them and take the criticism as well, so yeah Tracy liked my work so I sent her a PDF and because I had just published my book I sent one to her as well, so it went to ken grant, martin parr, and that kind of community of photographers, but with Tracy I also have to admit that in 3rd year portfolio reviews a lot of people have been handing them out for free because of whatโ€™s been going on recently, handing them out is always a good way to reference them

ALC I feel that covers most of my questions but I was wondering if you had any tips for Emerging Artists to get into the industry??

SM competition! I wish I started doing in my 2nd year but I didnโ€™t have the confidence in my own work until 3rd year, if thereโ€™s ever a chance to enter your work and potential have it displayed, for example for portrait photographers thereโ€™s the BJP portrait prize, because sappy get into their book 2nd/3rd year and it was a sick photo which was really cool, and that really made everyone buckle down and be like โ€˜right weโ€™ve got competition we need to properly go for itโ€™, it really helps get your name out there.

ALC oh wow

SM but maybe not when youโ€™ve got social media posts, donโ€™t do the same photo over and over again, as people might find them boring or get annoyed by them, you want to keep your audience engaged and engage with them.  like did you get marked on that for your PC3??

ALC yeah I think there was an aspect of engagement and the analysis of things

SM but yeah, its an aspect of yourself and itโ€™s the first thing they see, how you structure your social media page really reflects who you are as a creator, its really weird but you donโ€™t notice it until you think about it. But hmm getting out there, , , Iโ€™m trying to think about all the things we spoke about, oh the martin parr foundation is a great resource too.
ALC yeah
SM but building up those relationships with others is the best thing, and not just with your coursemates but with the guest lectures and teachers too, you donโ€™t realise it until 3rd year itโ€™s really the best thing, theyโ€™ll be honest with you, and in 3rd year you start to think outside of the box, like who can I talk to?
ALC that makes a lot of sense
SM
for my recent project with pheasants I contacted my local paper and its crazy how many group chats and people willing there are

ALC I would have never thought to contact a paper like that

SM but yeah thatโ€™s the thing people will happily shoot for you and the papers are happy to post something for you too, facebook too was such a huge help for me, I got hundreds of people within the first few weeks messaging me, I had 16/17 shoots lined up for my final project, but generally, if youโ€™re looking for people social media is great for documentary photography

, , ,
SM people can be so welcoming but you have to take everything with a pinch of salt not everyone is going to like your work, and that was quite a big thing for me to learn personally because I never showed my work in 2nd year because I was terrified of showing it, I never showed my work until I got the gratification that it was a good bit of work”

magazine ideas

during our landscaping project i noticed Elizabeth Reaney posting to her Instagram story photos of other artists’ works and some of them looked really impressive, i thought they would look amazing in a photography publication.

i sent her a message “Ok but thinking about it?? It could be pretty sweet, like send out a message to see who wants to be apart of it and have like a ยฃ3 donation to be featured in this publication, that would help cover printing costs, if you end up getting to many people apply you shortlist some, say 20 people and give them each a double page spread, maybe a small bit of text?? But that’s like ยฃ60?? You could print quite a few books when we go back, give the people who paid free copies and sell the rest at like ยฃ5?? Idk you’d have to check numbers but I think it could work pretty well, print it on nice official paper, would be so nice” . . .

Elizabeth seemed excited about this and gave me the good reception i was looking for to continue you this idea, she suggested making it into a uni society which we could have done through the BathSpa website, however, i admittedly i didn’t know how this would be as i probably only saw a few people working on it to help a handful of artists

ALC – “Dude making a photography magazine could be super cool?? I might consider it?? It’d be a good way to network, and it do it outside of uni work ??” . . . “We could organise everything and print it when we’re eventually allowed to go back to campus”

this was the beginning into this project outside of uni
